Culver Tree Commission

In recognition of the fact that trees increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify the Town, the Culver Municipal Tree Ordinance (Ordinance 2006-004) was enacted on August 8, 2006.  The ordinance included the establishment of the Culver Tree Commission consisting of five members, all appointed to three year terms by the Culver Town Council.  The charge of the Commission is to assist the Council in formulating policies and practices of urban forestry.

One of the Commission’s goals was to conduct and maintain a professional
survey of all of the trees along the streets or alleys, and in other public areas in the Town of Culver.  These are the trees, also referred to as street trees, in the Town’s right-of-way between the streets and the sidewalks.  The survey was conducted and resulted in the publication in November, 2007 of the Street Tree Inventory and Management Plan.  This Plan is the foundation upon which the Commission assists the Town in its efforts to maintain and grow its Urban Forest.

The Commission has been successful in obtaining grants for the annual purchase, and subsequent volunteer planting of new street trees.  The Commission was also instrumental in having Culver designated a Tree City USA.

Commission members can be contacted via mail at the Culver Town Hall, 200 E. Washington St., Culver, IN  46511, or by calling (574) 842-3140.  Regular public meetings of the Commission are held at the Culver Town Hall.
